THE BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR.

The BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR!!! Todd changed our lives! He’s not JUST a lawyer representing us for a case. Todd and his office have become Family. When we entered his office in August of 2022, we entered with such anxiety, uncertainty, and so much stress. Honestly we were very lost. My husband and I felt alone. How could a lawyer who didn’t know us, know our family, know our background represents us, When this could change our lives for the next 5-7years that my husband was facing in Federal jail. By the time our free consultation was over with Todd, we left his office at ease. All our questions were answered and we had a sense of relief.

What Are the Penalties for a First DUI Offense in Connecticut?

Getting arrested for drunk driving in Connecticut can be scary. Even if it’s your first offense, a DUI conviction can lead to fines, jail time, license suspension, and more. But the specific penalties really depend on the details of your case. Let’s break down what a first-time DUI offender can expect in Connecticut.

Criminal Penalties

A first DUI conviction in Connecticut is a misdemeanor offense, but it’s still treated as a serious crime. If found guilty, you may face these criminal penalties:

  • Jail time – Between 48 hours and 6 months in jail. The court may allow a suspended sentence with probation instead of jail.
  • Fines – Between $500 and $1,000.
  • Alcohol education program – Mandatory for all first-time offenders.
  • Ignition interlock device – Required for 1 year.

The jail sentence is usually on the lower end for first-time offenders – more like 2 days rather than 6 months. But it really depends on the circumstances of your case. Things like having a very high BAC, causing an accident, or injuring someone will make the penalties harsher.

License Suspension

In addition to criminal penalties, your driver’s license will be suspended by the CT DMV after a DUI conviction. For first offenses, your license is usually suspended for 45 days. Then you must drive with an ignition interlock device for 1 year before getting your full license back.

An interlock device requires you to blow into a breathalyzer before starting your car. If alcohol is detected, the car won’t start. You have to pay installation and monthly maintenance fees for the device while it’s required.

Fines and Fees

Between court fines, lawyer fees, and DMV fees, your first DUI can cost you thousands of dollars. The court fine is usually $500 to $1,000. But lawyer fees often exceed $1,500, and the interlock device costs over $100 per month.

You may also need to pay vehicle towing and impound fees if your car was towed after the DUI arrest. And don’t forget the cost of increased auto insurance rates after a DUI conviction.

Impact on Your Life

Beyond the official penalties, a DUI conviction can negatively impact your life in other ways:

  • Difficulty finding a job – Many employers conduct background checks and won’t hire someone with a recent DUI.
  • Travel issues – A DUI can cause problems entering Canada or other countries.
  • Custody issues – A DUI may be used against you in child custody disputes.

First Offender Program

Some first-time DUI offenders may qualify for Connecticut’s pretrial alcohol education program. This involves alcohol education classes and group meetings in lieu of criminal prosecution. The case is dismissed after successful completion of the program.

This is a good option to avoid having a criminal record. But you can only use it once in your lifetime. Talk to a DUI lawyer to see if you’re eligible.

Getting Legal Help

As you can see, even a first DUI carries severe penalties that can disrupt your life. The laws are complex, so speak to a DUI attorney before making any decisions. A lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed, minimize penalties, and protect your rights.

Don’t wait to seek legal help after a DUI arrest. Call a lawyer right away so they can start working on your defense. Most lawyers offer free consultations, so you have nothing to lose.

With an experienced DUI attorney on your side, you have the best chance of avoiding harsh penalties for a first offense. The lawyer knows all the options based on the details of your case. Don’t go through this alone!
