The BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR!!! Todd changed our lives! He’s not JUST a lawyer representing us for a case. Todd and his office have become Family. When we entered his office in August of 2022, we entered with such anxiety, uncertainty, and so much stress. Honestly we were very lost. My husband and I felt alone. How could a lawyer who didn’t know us, know our family, know our background represents us, When this could change our lives for the next 5-7years that my husband was facing in Federal jail. By the time our free consultation was over with Todd, we left his office at ease. All our questions were answered and we had a sense of relief.

What are common tax evasion schemes I should avoid?

Tax Evasion Schemes to Avoid

Paying taxes. Ugh, am I right? It’s like the government just can’t get enough of our hard-earned cash. But sometimes the temptation arises to cut a few corners and keep a bit more dough in our own pockets. I totally get it. However, we gotta be smart about this, folks. Some “tax savings” ideas you hear about are straight-up illegal and can land you in serious hot water. Let’s talk about what tax evasion actually is, some common (and sketchy) schemes to avoid, and how to lower your tax bill legally.

First things first: Tax evasion is when you intentionally try to reduce how much tax you owe by lying, hiding income, exaggerating deductions, etc. That’s very different from tax avoidance, which is using legal loopholes and strategies to minimize taxes. Avoidance – okay. Evasion – big no-no. Got it? Good.

Alright, on to the shady stuff. Here are some of the most popular tax evasion schemes to watch out for:

Failing to report cash income

Lots of folks earn cash doing side jobs – babysitting, lawn mowing, DJing parties, etc. And some get the “brilliant” idea to just, uh, forget to include that cash when filing their tax return. After all, if the income isn’t documented anywhere, how will the IRS know? Here’s how: they have ways of estimating your lifestyle based on your spending patterns. If you live large but report low income, red flags will be raised. When caught, you’ll pay backtaxes, steep penalties, and maybe even go to jail. Not worth it. Report all income, including cash.

Padding business expenses

If you run a business, you’re allowed to deduct valid expenses like supplies, mileage, meals, etc. But some entrepreneurs get greedy and start “enhancing” those numbers a bit…or a lot. If the IRS audits you and finds the expenses don’t match your receipts – yikes. You’ll pay those taxes back plus penalties. Moral of the story: deduct only 100% legitimate business expenses.

Hiding money offshore

This used to be a popular way for the super rich to stash money overseas and not pay taxes on it. But in recent years, the IRS has cracked down hard with new laws like FATCA. So unless you want to be hit with huge fines and criminal charges, don’t open secret foreign accounts. Declare all income, foreign and domestic.

Paying “under the table”

Some shady employers offer to pay cash “under the table” so both them and the employee avoid payroll taxes. Don’t do this. The IRS catches on eventually, you both get fined, and you lose Social Security/Medicare credits. Insist on being paid “on the books” the legal way.

Falsely claiming deductions

Making up bogus deductions seems tempting, but it’s not worth the risk. Crazy inflated medical bills, “business meals” that never happened, fake charity donations – the IRS scrutinizes returns for stuff like this. Better to take only honest deductions. Your conscience and criminal record will thank you.

Using a fake Social Security number

Some immigrants try to get a fake or stolen Social Security number to work and file taxes under. This is very risky, since the IRS cross-checks numbers and will catch the mismatch. Be patient and follow the legal immigration process. Paying taxes under your real name will avoid deportation or identity theft charges.

Whew, that’s a lot of shady stuff to avoid! It can be tempting to try “beating the system,” but true tax evasion often ends in massive penalties, audits, even jail time. Don’t let greed make you do something stupid. Now, if you want to pay less tax legally, here are some smart tips:

  • Max out retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs
  • Use tax-advantaged savings like HSAs and FSAs
  • Take all eligible deductions and credits
  • Consult a trusted tax preparer or CPA for guidance

See, you can lower your tax bill without resorting to anything shady! Pay what you legally owe, take advantage of legal loopholes, and sleep easy at night knowing you’re on the up-and-up. And don’t get me started on property taxes, ugh, that’s a whole other story! Let me know if you have any other tax questions. I’m here to help!
