THE BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR.

The BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR!!! Todd changed our lives! He’s not JUST a lawyer representing us for a case. Todd and his office have become Family. When we entered his office in August of 2022, we entered with such anxiety, uncertainty, and so much stress. Honestly we were very lost. My husband and I felt alone. How could a lawyer who didn’t know us, know our family, know our background represents us, When this could change our lives for the next 5-7years that my husband was facing in Federal jail. By the time our free consultation was over with Todd, we left his office at ease. All our questions were answered and we had a sense of relief.

Suicide Prevention for Those Facing Federal Prosecution

Being charged with a federal crime can be an incredibly stressful and isolating experience. The potential consequences are severe, and the uncertainty of the outcome can feel overwhelming. In this vulnerable state, some defendants contemplate taking their own lives.

While the justice system seems cold and unforgiving, there are people who care and want to help. You have so much more to offer this world. There are always alternatives, even if you can’t see them right now. Reach out – let someone in.

You Are Not Alone

Thoughts of suicide are more common among defendants than you might think. A study found that 22% of pretrial defendants reported suicidal thoughts in the past year. You are not alone in how you feel.

Confidential support is available through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or online chat. Counselors are there to listen without judgement and help you through this crisis. Reach out – there are people who care.

Causes of Suicidal Thoughts in Defendants

There are many reasons defendants contemplate suicide. Common factors include:

  • Feeling hopeless about the outcome of the case
  • Fear of consequences like long prison sentences
  • Shame and embarrassment about the charges
  • Isolation from family and friends
  • Loss of freedom if detained pretrial
  • Substance abuse or mental health issues

While these feelings are valid, suicide is not the answer. There are constructive ways to cope and move forward.

Warning Signs

Look for these warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide:

  • Talking about death, dying or suicide
  • Expressing feelings of hopelessness
  • Giving away possessions
  • Withdrawing from friends and family
  • Dramatic mood changes

If you observe any of these, reach out immediately. Ask directly if they are thinking about suicide. By talking openly, you give them permission to do the same. Listen without judgement, take threats seriously, and help them access support. You could save a life.

Seeking Help

If you are having suicidal thoughts, get help now. Here are steps to take:

  1. Call 988 to speak with a crisis counselor at the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
  2. Talk to your defense lawyer, who can alert the court and request mental health treatment.
  3. Tell pretrial services you are in crisis so they can connect you to services.
  4. Ask the jail staff for immediate mental health intervention if detained.
  5. Go to the emergency room and tell staff you are suicidal.

Don’t try to tough it out alone. Take action to get the support you urgently need. Your life is worth fighting for.

Treatment Options

Several treatment options exist for pretrial defendants struggling with suicidal thoughts:

  • Counseling: Talk therapy helps develop coping strategies for managing emotions.
  • Medication: Antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication can improve mental health issues.
  • Support groups: Connecting with others facing similar challenges reduces isolation.
  • Inpatient treatment: Short-term hospitalization helps stabilize someone in acute crisis.

Discuss options with your lawyer and pretrial services officer. The court may permit treatment as a condition of pretrial release. Your life and well-being are the priority.

Helping a Suicidal Defendant

If someone in your life facing criminal charges expresses suicidal thoughts, here’s how you can help:

  • Listen compassionately without judgement.
  • Encourage them to call 988 or seek mental health treatment.
  • Remind them of reasons to live like family and friends.
  • Limit their access to anything they could use to attempt suicide.
  • Stay with them until you can get help.
  • Alert their lawyer and pretrial services officer.
  • Call 988 yourself if you aren’t sure how to help.

With support from loved ones and mental health professionals, suicidal feelings can subside. Don’t lose hope.

Coping Strategies

When dealing with thoughts of suicide, try these coping techniques:

  • Connect with others – Isolation fuels depression. Stay close to family and friends.
  • Take it day-by-day – Don’t get overwhelmed by the big picture. Just focus on getting through one day.
  • Find purpose – Volunteer, help others, pursue goals – this gives meaning to your life.
  • Relaxation exercises – Deep breathing, meditation, yoga help relieve anxiety.
  • Create a safety plan – Identify warning signs and support people you’ll contact in crisis.

Building a strong support system and adopting healthy coping skills reduces the risk of suicide. You have so much life still to live.

Hope for the Future

Even if you are convicted and face years in prison, there are reasons for hope:

  • You can appeal the conviction or sentence.
  • It’s possible to earn an early release for good behavior.
  • You can find purpose by helping fellow inmates.
  • Prison education programs allow self-improvement.
  • Family and friends can still offer love and connection.
  • This experience will make you stronger and wiser.

No matter how long the road ahead, don’t lose faith that you will overcome this challenge. Your story is not over.

If you or a loved one is struggling with suicidal thoughts due to a federal case, know that help is available. You have so much life left to live. Reach out today.
