THE BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR.

The BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR!!! Todd changed our lives! He’s not JUST a lawyer representing us for a case. Todd and his office have become Family. When we entered his office in August of 2022, we entered with such anxiety, uncertainty, and so much stress. Honestly we were very lost. My husband and I felt alone. How could a lawyer who didn’t know us, know our family, know our background represents us, When this could change our lives for the next 5-7years that my husband was facing in Federal jail. By the time our free consultation was over with Todd, we left his office at ease. All our questions were answered and we had a sense of relief.

Preparing Character References for Philadelphia Sentencing Hearings

Getting charged with a crime is scary stuff. Even if you’re completely innocent, the legal system can feel cold and confusing. That’s why having people who know and care about you vouch for your character can make all the difference when facing a judge.

If your sentencing hearing is coming up in Philadelphia, making sure the court hears positive things about who you are as a person is so important. I want to walk you through exactly how to prepare strong, meaningful character reference letters that could truly impact the outcome of your case.

Who Should Write a Character Reference

The best character references come from people who have known you for a long time, have insight into your personality and values, and have firsthand experience with your positive qualities. Think close friends, family members, long-time colleagues, teachers, coaches, religious leaders, or community members.

The most compelling references highlight specific examples and moments that reveal your humanity. They should feel personalized rather than generic. Form letters won’t carry much weight.

What to Include in a Character Reference Letter

Cover the basics: The first paragraph should introduce who the writer is, their relationship to you, and for how long they’ve known you. Quick background like what you studied together, sports you played on the same team, or how you met provides context.

Share positive qualities: The next 1-2 paragraphs should focus on detailing your strengths of character. What words come to mind when they think of you? Are you generous, kind, patient, hardworking? How have they experienced those qualities through your relationship?

Give specific examples: The most powerful character references get into the details here. When exactly did they see you demonstrate integrity, responsibility, determination, leadership or other virtues? Vivid stories and moments that capture positive aspects of your personality are hugely helpful.

Address the situation: The final paragraph should reflect on the pending legal situation in a thoughtful way. Express confidence in your fundamental goodness as a human being. Share sincere hopes that the court will see you as more than your worst moments.

What Not to Include

Don’t speculate on legal matters: Character references should remain firmly focused on who you are as an individual. They shouldn’t theorize about the particular events around your case or charges. Stick to your own experience of the person.

Don’t attack others: It’s understandable to feel angry or defensive, but character references should never place blame or accusations. Keep things 100% positive. Taking shots at others just detracts from your goal.

Don’t ramble: Be conscious of length. Though you may have decades of fond memories to share, resist overdoing it. Concise, carefully chosen stories have greater impact than dozens of loose anecdotes. Shoot for 1-2 typed pages.

Crafting Your Letter

Write from the heart: Tap into your authentic memories and emotions. Don’t hold back from expressing how much you care for your friend or family member. This is your chance to put a human face on the defendant.

But edit thoughtfully: Once you have a draft, carefully review your letter. Make sure there aren’t major typos or grammar issues. Tighten up rambling thoughts. Though raw honesty gives power, polish matters too.

See it as an appeal: Think of your character reference as a heartfelt appeal to the judge. You know this person’s humanity; now you want to evoke it for the court. Use vivid imagery and sincere feeling to paint a picture of their soul.

Format cleanly: Use standard business letter format. Include your return address, the date, addresses for both the court and defendant, proper salutations, clear paragraph breaks, and space for signatures. Print on quality paper.

Submit properly: Make several copies of letters to submit for inclusion in court records. You may need to send directly to lawyers as well. Follow all provided guidelines so your reference gets full consideration.

The sentencing hearing is the defendant’s big chance to influence how justice gets handed down. Thoughtful character references from those who see and cherish their fundamental goodness could truly affect the outcome. I hope these tips help you write a letter that reminds the court of the precious human life in their hands. There is still room for empathy and grace, even in this broken system. Praying for mercy and healing for all.
