What is a Drug Sting Operation?

A drug sting operation, is when law enforcement officers go undercover, to catch people attempting to buy or sell illegal drugs. It’s a deceptive tactic, used to facilitate arrests. The officers, pretend to be either drug dealers or buyers. They create an opportunity, for someone to commit a drug crime. When that person takes the bait, and tries to make the illegal transaction, they get arrested. Pretty sneaky, right? But, it’s a common and legally permitted practice, for fighting the war on drugs. Let’s look at some examples, of how these operations play out.

Common Drug Sting Scenarios

One scenario, is the classic “buy-bust” operation. An undercover cop, poses as a dealer, selling drugs on the street. When someone approaches to purchase from them, backup officers move in, to make the arrest. Another common tactic, is using informants or undercover officers, to infiltrate a drug trafficking organization from the inside. They gain the trust of dealers, make undercover purchases to gather evidence, and eventually assist in taking down the whole operation.

Sometimes, law enforcement will set up a fake business, like a pawnshop, bar or massage parlor. This “storefront” acts as a cover, for undercover officers to sell drugs, firearms or solicit prostitution. It allows them to cast a wide net, and catch many offenders over an extended period. There are even cases, of officers creating elaborate fictional scenarios, to lure suspects into a sting. Like advertising a fake concert or event, and arresting people who show up expecting to buy or sell drugs there. The possibilities are endless, for sting operations. As long as law enforcement can legally, and deceptively, facilitate the target crime, without entrapment, it’s fair game.
