The NYPD has capable anti-drug units. The latter are especially dedicated to the suppression of LSD. LSD, which is commonly known as acid, is a synthetic psychedelic drug. It is usually made available on small tabs of paper that are licked or swallowed. The effects of LSD are immediate and extreme. A “trip” lasts up to 12 hours and consists of hallucinations and impaired judgment that is quite wild and unpredictable. There are long-term effects of taking the drug. A person can experience flashbacks months after taking it.

You were at a music festival when police searched your backpack and found several small squares of blotter paper that a friend had slipped in without your knowledge. You were arrested and charged with criminal possession of LSD under New York Penal Law, and now face the possibility of a felony conviction.
Can I really be charged with a felony for possessing LSD even if I didn't know it was in my bag?
Under New York Penal Law § 220.06, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree — which includes any amount of LSD — is a Class D felony carrying up to seven years in prison. While the prosecution must prove that you knowingly possessed the substance, courts often infer knowledge from the fact that the drugs were found among your personal belongings. A strong defense strategy would challenge that presumption by demonstrating you had no awareness of the blotter paper and had no intent to possess or distribute it. An experienced attorney can also explore whether the search itself was lawful under the Fourth Amendment and move to suppress the evidence if your rights were violated.

Many people have died as a result of rash actions taken while under the influence of LSD. This is one of the many reasons why law enforcement has come down so heavy on it, and why the penalties for the possession and sale of LSD possession are so severe.
