Bronx Crime Rate 2025 | NYC Criminal Defense Lawyers

So your probably reading this because you just got arrested in the Bronx and the prosecutor’s already talking about how “dangerous” the borough is and why you shouldn’t get bail. Maybe your sitting in central booking right now wondering why everyone’s treating you like a statistics instead of a person. Or maybe your family’s trying to understand why the judge set bail at $50,000 when similar charges in Manhattan got an ROR. Look, we get it. Your ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS. And you should be! Because prosecutors in the Bronx are literally using crime statistics to punish you for crimes OTHER PEOPLE committed according to NYPD borough crime data!

Is the Bronx Really the Most Dangerous Borough in NYC?

Let me tell you the truth that nobody wants to admit – the Bronx has become the poster child for crime statistics that prosecutors weaponize against defendants every single day! The numbers are complicated and there using them to destroy your case before you even get to trial! Here’s what’s actually happening in 2025. Through October, the Bronx recorded 85 murders – that’s down 11.5% from 96 in 2024! Robberies decreased 2.8% to 3,821. Burglaries dropped 4.5%. Grand larceny decreased 8.8%. Those are SIGNIFICANT declines that should mean prosecutors ease up on defendants, right? WRONG! Instead, prosecutors cherry-pick the statistics that make the Bronx look dangerous! They’ll tell the judge about how the Bronx had 123 murders in 2024 – 31% of ALL New York City murders! They’ll talk about how the Bronx was the ONLY BOROUGH where shootings increased in 2024 while every other borough saw decreases! They’ll mention that the serious crime rate hit 20.1 per 1,000 residents compared to just 13.6 citywide! What they WON’T tell you is that murders dropped 29.2% in early 2025! Shootings fell 30.4%! They won’t mention that these statistics have NOTHING to do with whether YOU specifically committed the crime your charged with! But by the time there done painting the Bronx as a war zone, the judge is convinced you need to be locked up just because of your zip code! According to CrimeGrade safety analysis, the Bronx gets a D grade for violent crime and ranks in the 23rd percentile for safety. That means it’s safer than only 23% of cities but less safe than 77%. The violent crime rate is 4.602 per 1,000 residents. Prosecutors LOVE these numbers because they can wave them around in court like your personally responsible for all of it!

How Do Crime Statistics Affect Your Criminal Charges in the Bronx?

This is where things get REALLY messed up. Your supposed to be judged on what YOU did, right? The prosecution has to prove beyond reasonable doubt that YOU committed the specific crime charged. That’s the Constitution – the Sixth Amendment right to confront witnesses, to challenge evidence specific to your case! But here’s what actually happens in Bronx courtrooms. At your arraignment, the prosecutor stands up and argues you shouldn’t get bail because “the Bronx has a serious violence problem.” At plea negotiations, they refuse reasonable offers because there “sending a message” about the borough’s crime rate. At sentencing, they tell the judge the community needs deterrence more than rehabilitation! None of this is about YOU! It’s guilt by geographic association! Your being convicted based on what thousands of OTHER people did in the same borough where you happen to live or got arrested! That’s not individualized justice – that’s statistical punishment! We’ve seen this play out in horrifying ways. Client charged with felony assault? Prosecutors cite that felony assaults rose 4.5% to 6,912 cases and reached there highest levels since the 1990s! Now your case isn’t just about whether you actually committed assault – it’s about the judge wanting to “do something” about the Bronx assault epidemic! Client facing weapons charges? Prosecutors talk about how the Bronx had 324 shooting incidents in 2024 – a 6% increase while other boroughs saw decreases! Suddenly your illegal gun possession charge becomes part of a bigger narrative about gun violence, and the prosecutor’s demanding maximum sentencing to “send a message!” Here’s what makes us absolutely sick – even when crime goes DOWN, prosecutors don’t change there tactics! Murders dropped 29.2% in early 2025? They claim credit for being tough on crime and maintain the same aggressive posture! Shootings fell 30.4%? They say it’s because there refusing plea bargains and demanding maximum sentences, so they need to keep doing it! You can’t win! Statistics go up? Your part of the problem and need harsh punishment! Statistics go down? The harsh punishment is working so you still get maximum sentences! It’s DISGUSTING!

What Are the Most Dangerous Neighborhoods in the Bronx?

Want to know something that’ll make you even angrier? Prosecutors treat the ENTIRE BRONX like it’s uniformly dangerous, but the statistics tell a completely different story! Where you got arrested matters HUGELY for understanding actual risk – but prosecutors ignore those distinctions! The south neighborhoods are definitely the most dangerous. Hunts Point, especialy the north, west, and northwest areas, has serious problems. The property crime rate there is 14.4 per 1,000 residents and violent crime hits 13.6 per 1,000 residents according to neighborhood crime analysis. Longwood, Mott Haven, Tremont, Fordham, Highbridge, and Morrisania all have elevated crime rates. Mott Haven has major drug trafficking and gang activity. Highbridge is known for high violent crime. Hunts Point has prostitution and drug problems. Morrisania deals with gang activity. These are REAL problems that residents face every day! But here’s what prosecutors won’t tell you – alot of the Bronx is actually pretty safe! The north and northwest neighborhoods like Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil, Administration Hill, and Riversdale are really safe! In the east, Baychester, Pelham Bay, City Island, Laconia South – these areas have LOW crime rates! The southeast part of the city is considered the safest, with your chance of being a crime victim at 1 in 41! So if you got arrested in Riverdale or Pelham Bay, should prosecutors be citing borough-wide statistics about Hunts Point crime? Of course not! But they do it anyway because it helps them get convictions! They want the judge and jury thinking your from the “dangerous Bronx” even if you live in one of the safest neighborhoods in the entire city! Your defense attorney should be demanding specificity! What’s the crime rate in the ACTUAL NEIGHBORHOOD where the incident occurred? How does that compare to the borough average? What’s the trend in THAT SPECIFIC AREA over the past six months? Are we comparing apples to oranges by lumping Riverdale and Hunts Point together?
