Fundbox: 6 Terms That Decide What Default Costs You
A Fundbox default is a loan default, not a failed receivables purchase, because Fundbox loans and lines of credit are originated by First Electronic Bank or Lead Bank and Fundbox holds a California lender license. That single distinction decides the arguments available to you.

If you default on a Fundbox line of credit, the cost of it is set by six terms: the amount of the weekly automatic debit, any new overdue balance, late fees, NSF fees, the UCC lien (and personal guarantee if you agreed to one), and credit reporting of the late payments; and you may pay taxes on any settlement. The document that controls what happens if you default on Fundbox isn’t the document you agree to to start using Fundbox - it’s the separate agreement you make to get the loan. The best time to act, and the time when you will have the most options available, is before you default.
1. The weekly debit
Fundbox operates on a line of credit that you repay with automatic weekly debits from your business bank account. Each payment is an equal installment that covers principal and amortized fees together. Here’s the key - when you fail to make a weekly debit for any reason, Fundbox treats that as a past due amount. And you don’t owe it next week when the next debit comes due - it’s overdue now.
An account that gets too far behind on Fundbox weekly payments can amass a big overdue balance, because a missed payment consists of both a missed principal payment and the one week’s worth of fees that had been set to collect at that time.
2. The late fee
Here’s what Fundbox does. As soon as any payment is late, it calculates a late fee that is usually equal to the average of the fees in the original plan you agreed to. For instance, on a twelve-week draw with a total fee of $600, missing a weekly debit would add a late fee of fifty dollars.
That late fee comes on top of the overdue balance, and another one adds on every week until the account is caught up. So two or three short weeks multiply the late fees just as they multiply the overdue amount.
3. The NSF fee
If a Fundbox weekly debit fails because the account has insufficient funds, the company adds a six-dollar NSF fee. And your bank may charge its own NSF fee also. If Fundbox tries to draft the oldest missing weekly payment before the one that’s due, the one that was due becomes overdue; when that draft fails, additional late fees build on top of it.
One missed payment can trigger a downward spiral. Each week adds to the past due balance because the new week’s debit fails too. So one week’s balance shortage becomes several weeks’ worth of overdue amounts, the Fundbox late fee, and at some point an NSF fee. It adds up quickly.

4. The lien and guarantee
Fundbox requires that its customers grant it a UCC lien, and might also require that the business owner sign a personal guarantee agreeing to be personally liable if the business defaults on the loan. If you default, the lender may take the collateral without going through court as long as it doesn’t breach the peace. And if a sale of collateral doesn’t cover the debt you can owe a deficiency after it.
The UCC filing was made when you funded and it stays in the public record; the default means it might be a problem for you when you shop for credit. Other lenders looking at your company can see that Fundbox has it.
Though a personal guarantee doesn’t change your contract, it changes you. If you default and owe a deficiency, the lender can try to collect it just as if you had borrowed as an individual.
5. The credit reporting
Fundbox reports to the business credit bureaus. When you miss a payment you can expect Fundbox to report it. Note that Fundbox can also report your missed payments to Experian’s consumer bureau, affecting your personal credit in some cases.
Since those late payments affect your business score, they can also affect any loans you want to get in the future. Even for strong borrowers, it’s harder to find credit today, whether from banks or other lenders. According to a Federal Reserve survey done in 2025, forty-two percent of business owners who applied for credit got all the money they applied for. In 2019 that figure was sixty-two percent. And twenty-two percent of new applicants weren’t approved to get any new credit.
6. The tax on a settlement
A typical settlement says you pay less than you owe. The general rule is, the forgiven debt is taxable unless you can fit it into an exception, like bankruptcy or insolvency. If you settle, the lender usually sends you Form 1099-C for amounts of six hundred dollars or more.
Some people advise trying to make lenders negotiate by intentionally defaulting. This is bad advice because even if they do negotiate, the missed payments will still trigger every fee above, and any part that is forgiven will usually be subject to tax.
Don’t compound a bad situation. Don’t block the debit yourself, because you turn a cash flow problem into a breach. Read your agreement. Then get a written payoff figure and a breakdown showing every debt and weekly payment on one page.
Time is as important as the size of the debt. Restructuring a loan is harder if you’ve missed payments. And if the money coming into the business bank account can’t cover the weekly outgoing payments, it’s time to price restructuring even if the business is current.
