THE BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR.

The BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR!!! Todd changed our lives! He’s not JUST a lawyer representing us for a case. Todd and his office have become Family. When we entered his office in August of 2022, we entered with such anxiety, uncertainty, and so much stress. Honestly we were very lost. My husband and I felt alone. How could a lawyer who didn’t know us, know our family, know our background represents us, When this could change our lives for the next 5-7years that my husband was facing in Federal jail. By the time our free consultation was over with Todd, we left his office at ease. All our questions were answered and we had a sense of relief.

Advice for First-Time Lawyers in Wellington

Congratulations on passing the bar and landing your first legal job in Wellington! As a new lawyer, you’re entering an exciting but demanding career. This article offers advice on getting started in Wellington’s legal community – from networking tips, to managing your first cases, to work/life balance.

Introduce Yourself Around Town

Wellington’s legal community is pretty tight-knit. Take some time your first month on the job to introduce yourself around town – grab coffee with other junior lawyers, stop by the local courthouse to meet the clerks and bailiffs, attend Wellington Law Society events. Getting to know people early on will pay dividends down the road.

Also — don’t be shy about asking more experienced attorneys to mentor you! Having a knowledgeable guide as you gain your legal sea legs can make a world of difference.

Learn the Local Legal Culture

Every courthouse has its own unique culture and expectations. Take careful note early on of how things are done in the Wellington legal word – the unwritten rules around courtroom and filing procedures, scheduling, communication norms, etc. Some questions to clarify:

  • How strictly do judges enforce deadlines for filings and discoveries?
  • Is email the preferred communication method, or phone calls?
  • How formal are the courtroom proceedings compared to other counties?

Learning these nuances early on will help avoid embarrassing missteps down the road!

Leverage Available Resources

Don’t reinvent the wheel! Wellington offers great resources for lawyers, like the Wellington Community Law Centre’s free legal advice sessions . Lean on mentors and colleagues if you need help finding specific laws or precedents for a tricky case. And don’t be afraid to ask the friendly court clerks for help navigating procedures.

Oh, and definitely take advantage of the New Zealand Law Society’s mentoring program for new lawyers! Connecting with an experienced attorney in your field can provide invaluable wisdom.

Find a Specialty

It’s tough starting out as a generalist attorney straight out of law school. Consider picking one or two legal specialties to start building expertise – this will set you up for career success. Look for niche practice areas that leverage your existing skills or interests.

For example, if you love the outdoors, consider specializing in environmental law. Or if you’re a wiz with numbers, construction law could be a great specialty.

Learn to Juggle Efficiently

One reality of starting out in private practice is that you’ll likely handle a wide variety of small cases rather than a few huge ones. This means lots of multitasking! Learning to juggle many balls efficiently is crucial.

Some tactics that help: religiously triaging your workload, blocking time on your calendar for specific cases, leveraging checklists to stay organized. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed – taming the chaos just takes some practice.

Invest Time in Professional Development

In the busyness of a new legal career, it can be tempting to let your own learning slide. Fight that urge! Carving out even an hour a week for professional development will pay dividends. Read up on industry trends and new case law, listen to legal podcasts on your commute, attend trainings to expand your skills.

Not only will this make you a better lawyer – it also shows initiative to partners if you ever want their backing to make partner yourself someday.

Learn to Lose Gracefully

Here’s the reality – you’re going to lose some cases early on. That’s just how it goes, especially when you’re gaining experience. The key is handling losses with maturity and grace rather than beating yourself up.

Remember: even the best lawyers lose cases frequently. Learn from your losses rather than dwelling on them. Figure out what you could improve for next time – then let it go and move forward.

Find Work-Life Balance

It’s cliché but true – lawyers struggle terribly with work-life balance. The legal profession’s “always on” mentality makes burnout an ever-present threat. As you start your career, be very intentional about setting boundaries and making time for self-care.

Build that habit now rather than trying to claw back work-life balance later. Block out time for hobbies, friends and family. Take all your vacation days. Guard weekends fiercely. The legal career marathon is exhausting – don’t burn yourself out in the first mile!

Enjoy the Ride!

For all their challenges, legal careers can be immensely rewarding. As you start out in Wellington’s legal community, try to enjoy the journey – celebrate small wins, learn from mistakes, make friends along the way. If you focus too myopically on partner track and prestige, you’ll miss out on all the growth and fun early-career years have to offer.

We wish you all the best with your new legal role! Please reach out if you ever need support getting your footing as a Wellington lawyer.
