THE BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR.

The BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR!!! Todd changed our lives! He’s not JUST a lawyer representing us for a case. Todd and his office have become Family. When we entered his office in August of 2022, we entered with such anxiety, uncertainty, and so much stress. Honestly we were very lost. My husband and I felt alone. How could a lawyer who didn’t know us, know our family, know our background represents us, When this could change our lives for the next 5-7years that my husband was facing in Federal jail. By the time our free consultation was over with Todd, we left his office at ease. All our questions were answered and we had a sense of relief.

Red Flags to Watch Out for When Meeting Criminal Lawyers in NYC

Red Flags to Watch Out for When Meeting Criminal Lawyers in NYC

Finding the right criminal lawyer can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? Who can you trust? What red flags should you watch out for?

I’ve compiled this guide to help you spot some common red flags when meeting potential criminal defense attorneys in New York City. Consider it your BS detector as you navigate this process.

They Guarantee Specific Results

“I guarantee I can get your charges dropped.” “You’ll never see a day behind bars if you hire me.” Any promises like this should make you run the other way!

The legal system can be unpredictable. Even the best NYC criminal attorneys cannot guarantee outcomes. An ethical lawyer will be upfront about potential consequences and help you prepare for various scenarios.

They Push You to Plead Guilty

Pleading guilty closes doors. Your lawyer should fully investigate your case and discuss all options before recommending next steps. If they push you to take a plea deal right off the bat, huge red flag!

A good criminal defense lawyer will analyze the prosecution’s evidence, challenge questionable claims, and fight to get charges dismissed or reduced when possible. Pleading should be an informed decision, not something you’re forced into.

They Have No Experience or Specialization

You wouldn’t hire a podiatrist to do brain surgery, right? Well you shouldn’t hire a real estate or divorce attorney to handle criminal charges either. Make sure any lawyer you consider specializes in criminal defense and has extensive experience representing clients facing similar accusations.

Ask pointed questions – how many years have they practiced criminal law? How often do they handle cases like yours? Can they provide client references? It takes expertise to effectively defend NY criminal charges, so choose your fighter wisely!

They Won’t Give You a Clear Fee Agreement

Beware of lawyers who dodge questions about their rates or try locking you into vague retainer agreements. They may jack up fees down the road without warning or transparency around what you’re paying for.

A reputable attorney will explain their billing structure upfront – whether it’s hourly, flat fee, or contingency-based. They’ll also detail what expenses are covered and provide written fee agreements for you to review before moving forward.

If something feels off or confusing, keep looking! Financial surprises are the last thing you need when facing criminal prosecution.

They Have Disciplinary Issues on Their Record

Would you visit a doctor who’s been disciplined for malpractice? Probably not. Well you shouldn’t hire a lawyer with ethics violations either.

Do your research – check ratings on Avvo and Lawyers.com. Search the NY State Bar’s Attorney Directory to see if a lawyer has faced suspensions, disbarments or other disciplinary actions. This information is public for a reason – to help people make informed choices!

Their Office Seems Disorganized

Granted, lawyers are busy people dealing with a lot of moving pieces. But if their office is downright chaotic, files are overflowing, and no one can ever find your information, it may indicate broader issues.

Your case requires meticulous attention to detail and rapid response times. Disorganization can lead to missed deadlines, court errors, ineffective defense preparation, and other problems that could negatively impact your case.

Make sure any attorney you hire works closely with skilled support staff and has systems in place to handle documentation appropriately. Their competency matters!

They Won’t Stop Talking About Themselves

Guess what? Your criminal charges aren’t about them! If a lawyer spends your whole consult bragging about their credentials, celebrity clients, yacht vacations and other BS rather than asking questions and listening to you – red flag city!

You need someone who will take time to understand your unique situation and goals. A self-centered lawyer who loves the sound of their own voice? Hard pass.

You Don’t Connect on a Personal Level

Chemistry matters, folks. You’ll be sharing vulnerable details and placing immense trust in your criminal lawyer. If someone rubs you the wrong way from the start or dismisses your concerns, keep looking!

The right attorney will demonstrate compassion, offer reassurance when appropriate, and establish genuine rapport. Never settle – finding a lawyer you feel comfortable opening up to can make navigating this difficult process much less intimidating.

They Won’t Provide References

Any lawyer can talk a big game about all the cases they’ve won. But do they have happy clients willing to back up those claims? Ask for references!

A reputable attorney will gladly provide names and contact info for past clients who’ve agreed to share their experiences. Speaking with references helps verify capabilities and client satisfaction first-hand rather than blindly taking someone’s word.

If a lawyer refuses or makes excuses, consider it a red flag. They may have something to hide…

Trust Your Gut!

At the end of the day, listen to your intuition. You’ll spend a lot of one-on-one time with your criminal lawyer throughout the legal process. If something feels off for any reason, don’t doubt yourself – keep looking for someone who’s the right fit!

Finding the best criminal defense attorney in NYC takes research, asking the right questions, and ultimately following your gut. You’ve got this! And remember – look out for those red flags to avoid bad apples along the way.

Wishing you wisdom and patience as you navigate this challenging process. You have people rooting for you!
