THE BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR.

The BEST LAWYER ANYONE COULD ASK FOR!!! Todd changed our lives! He’s not JUST a lawyer representing us for a case. Todd and his office have become Family. When we entered his office in August of 2022, we entered with such anxiety, uncertainty, and so much stress. Honestly we were very lost. My husband and I felt alone. How could a lawyer who didn’t know us, know our family, know our background represents us, When this could change our lives for the next 5-7years that my husband was facing in Federal jail. By the time our free consultation was over with Todd, we left his office at ease. All our questions were answered and we had a sense of relief.

How Does Connecticut Handle Out-of-State DUI Charges?

Getting charged with a DUI is never fun, but it can be especially confusing and stressful when it happens out-of-state. As a Connecticut resident, you might be wondering – how will an out-of-state DUI affect me back home? Well, I’ve done some research into Connecticut’s DUI laws and penalties, and here’s what you need to know.

Connecticut Will Find Out About Your Out-of-State DUI

If you’re convicted of a DUI in another state, that state will report the conviction to the Connecticut DMV. This is because of something called the Driver License Compact, which Connecticut and most other states have signed. It’s an agreement that requires states to share information about driving offenses.

So if you’re convicted of a DUI in say, New York or Massachusetts, the DMV there will notify Connecticut’s DMV of the conviction. Then, Connecticut will likely impose penalties on you as if you had gotten the DUI here.

You’ll Face Connecticut’s DUI Penalties

Since Connecticut will find out about an out-of-state DUI conviction, you’ll end up facing Connecticut’s DUI penalties. This is kind of like getting hit with a double-whammy of punishments.

Some of the penalties Connecticut may impose include:

  • Driver’s license suspension – The length depends on whether it’s your first offense or you have priors. A first DUI conviction leads to a 45 day suspension.
  • Fines – First offense fines are $500 to $1,000.
  • Alcohol education program – You’ll have to complete a 15-week program.
  • Ignition interlock device – This breathalyzer device has to be installed in your car for up to 2 years.

As you can see, Connecticut doesn’t mess around when it comes to DUI penalties. And remember, these would be in addition to any fines, license suspension, or jail time imposed by the original state.

Should You Fight an Out-of-State DUI?

Because of the serious penalties you’ll face in Connecticut, it’s usually a good idea to fight an out-of-state DUI charge. Don’t just plead guilty to get it over with.

An experienced DUI lawyer can help get your charges reduced or even dismissed. This prevents a conviction from appearing on your record and avoids extra punishments in Connecticut.

How to Handle the Specifics

Okay, so that covers the basics of how Connecticut handles out-of-state DUIs. But what about some of the specifics and logistics?

New York DWI

In New York they call it DWI not DUI. But it’s basically the same thing – operating a vehicle while impaired. The key is they use the term “impaired” rather than Connecticut’s “under the influence.” New York’s DWI laws are also a bit stricter than Connecticut’s.

Massachusetts OUI

Massachusetts uses the term Operating Under the Influence (OUI). Their laws are fairly similar to Connecticut’s DUI policies. One difference is that MA has stricter penalties for drivers under 21.

Taking Out-of-State DUI Classes

If you have to take DUI classes, your lawyer can get permission from the court for you to take them back home in Connecticut. This makes things easier than having to travel back for classes.

Hiring an Out-of-State Lawyer

You can hire a lawyer in the state where you got the DUI. Or you can hire a Connecticut DUI lawyer familiar with out-of-state cases. Either way, be sure they’re experienced and have a good track record.

Paying Fines to Multiple States

Unfortunately, you may have to pay DUI fines and fees to both the original state and to Connecticut. The good news is a lawyer may get fines and penalties reduced or waived in one or both states.

The Bottom Line

An out-of-state DUI causes double trouble. You’ll face penalties in the state where you’re arrested, as well as additional punishments back home in Connecticut. That’s why it’s so important to fight these types of charges and avoid a conviction on your record.

With an experienced DUI lawyer on your side, you can hopefully get the charges dismissed or reduced. This helps minimize the fines, license suspension, and other consequences you’ll face in Connecticut.

Don’t try to navigate an out-of-state DUI alone. Get professional legal help to ensure the best possible outcome. Your future in Connecticut depends on it!
